Plot:

Naruto Uzumaki is a young boy who has the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox
sealed within him. Twelve years before the start of the series, the Nine-Tailed
Demon Fox attacked the ninja village Konohagakure, slaughtering many
people. In response, the leader of Konohagakure – the Fourth Hokage –
sacrificed his life to seal the demon inside Naruto when he was a newborn.
Konohagakure, however, regarded Naruto as if he were the demon fox itself
and mistreated him throughout most of his childhood. A decree made by the
Third Hokage forbade anyone mention the attack of the demon fox to anyone.
Years later, Naruto was tricked by the renegade ninja Mizuki into stealing a
forbidden scroll, but was stopped by his teacher, Iruka Umino. That encounter
made Naruto realize he was the container of the demon fox.

The main story follows Naruto and his friends' personal growth. Naruto befriends
two comrades, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, who are assigned with him
to form a three-person team under an experienced sensei named Kakashi Hatake.
Naruto also befriends other characters that he meets throughout the series. They
learn new abilities, get to know each other and other villagers better, and
experience a coming-of-age journey as Naruto dreams of becoming the Hokage
of Konohagakure.

Team 7

Naruto Uzumaki, son of Minato Namikaze and Kushina
Uzumaki.

Before his birth Minato and Kushina decided to
name Naruto after the main character in Jiraiya's first book,
wanting their son to be as great a ninja as the character was.
This made Jiraiya Naruto's godfather. Soon after his birth,
however, the Kyuubi, or the
Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, attacked Konohagakure, also known
as Village Hidden in the
Leaves. To save the village, Minato, who was currently the
Fourth Hokage, sealed the demon fox into his son's body, hoping
it would become useful to him in the future. Since the Jutsu
he used requires the user's soul, Minato died afterwards, leaving
Naruto to grow up knowing nothing of his parents, however,
before dieing, he asked the villagers to look upon Naruto as a
hero, nothing less. Naruto received his mother's last name, which
Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, believed it was best that
nobody knows Naruto was the son of the Fourth Hokage.
The Kyuubi gives Naruto a great amount of chakra and the ability
to heal at a fast rate, and even though these abilities are helpful,
the Nine Tails causes Naruto a lot of trouble. Naruto was shunned
and hated by the villagers because of the demon sealed within him.

Sasuke Uchiha, son of Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha and the
little brother of Itachi Uchiha.
Sasuke grew up in the shadow of his older brother Itachi. Itachi was
seen as a "true prodigy" and the Uchiha clan was greatly interested
in Itachi and had great pride in him. Even Fugaku had an active
interest in Itachi, but on the other hand, Itachi took interest in
Sasuke's progress in becoming a ninja when their father wouldn't.
When Sasuke enrolled in the Ninja Academy, he still failed to escape
Itachi's shadow and failed to recieve any recognition from his father,
even though he was constantly scoring on top of his class.
As Itachi began to continuously act strange, his bond with his father
weakened. Sasuke's father decided to spend time with Sasuke and
taught him the Great Fireball Technique, at first, Sasuke failed, but
after a week of training, Sasuke proved to be a genius and
succeeded in performing the jutsu in front of Fugaku, which greatly
surprised him, and with this done, Sasuke finally recieved his
father's recognition.

Sakura Haruno

In the early years of her Academy attendance, Sakura was bullied frequently because of her large forehead. She attempted to hide her forehead behind her bangs, but her attempt merely fueled the teasing because it revealed she was sensitive about her forehead. Ino Yamanaka realized this and helped Sakura by giving her a red ribbon to reveal the cute features of her forehead. Sakura then overcame her insecurity. The two girls became good friends and Sakura gained confidence, developing her own personality under Ino's guidance. Despite this, Sakura began to feel as though she was living in Ino's shadow and longed to prove that she was Ino's equal. Later, the two girls found that they were both infatuated with Sasuke Uchiha. Sakura then ended their friendship to become rivals, so they could properly compete for Sasuke's love.

Kakashi Hatake, son of Sakumo Hatake.

Ever since he was young, Kakashi has been known as an extremely gifted prodigy. He was also regarded by many as the best of his generaton. In the Academy, he received top marks and showed an innate aptitude in the ninja arts. This allowed him to graduate the academy in a single year, at the top of his class, at the age of five. He then became a Chunin a year later. Even though Kakashi achieved great success, his father fell into disgrace after choosing to save his comrades over completing the mission, as a consequence, Konoha suffered in the war effort. With no honor, Sakumo took his own life after a deep depression and a drop in his skills, this influenced Kakashi to live strictly by the ninja code.
After graduating, Kakashi was teamed with Obito Uchiha and Rin, under the leadership of Minato Namikaze, the future Fourth Hokage. Kakashi's relationship with Obito and Rin has been noted to be very similar to that of Sasuke's relationship with Naruto and Sakura, as he is known as the indifferent genius sharing a complicated relationship with his teammates, which later developed into a close friendship.

Team 10

Shikamaru Nara, son of Shikaku and Yoshino Nara.

Shikamaru Nara has known Choji Akimichi since before the Academy. They met when Shikamaru was playing "Ninja" with other kids. Those kids began to ridicule Choji for being slow and overweight. Shikamaru, however, decided to recognize Choji's strength and worth as a person. Because of Shikamaru's kindness, Choji is unquestioningly loyal to him and would give his life for Shikamaru.

Once the joined the Academy, Shikamaru and Choji were "dead-lasts" along with Naruto Uzumaki and Kiba Inuzuka. They would usually ditch the Academy and spend their day looking for more interesting pastimes. Though, Shikamaru would usually just sleep the day away. In his case, the simple effort of putting a pen to paper was just too much effort for him to put into, unless he absolutely had to. Iruka Umino, their instructor (or sensei), would give them all the same condemnation.

Choji Akimich, son of Choza Akimichi (his mother is seen in Shippuuden, after Asuma's death, but no name has been given.)

Choji was often made fun of by the other kids when ever he tried to play "Ninja" (which appears to be a mixture of "Tag" and "Hide and Go Seek".) They would always tell him that whatever team he was on was bound to lose. One day, they don't let him participate at all. However, Shikamaru Nara stuck up for him by pointing out that the teams would be uneven without Choji. Despite this, they still didn't allow him to play.

Choji then talked to his father, atop a roof, obviously still upset of how the other children treated him. His father told Choji something very wise, that few people have Choji's kind and caring heart, and that one day someone would recognize him for it and respect Choji for who he is, and that they would become the best of friends. Shikamaru then appears, as he finished walking up the stairs. Choji immediately recognizes him as the kid who defended him. He asked Shikamaru why he wasn't playing the game and Shikamaru responded by saying it was a drag and explained that he enjoyed coming to the rooftop to watch the clouds. He then pointed out that Choji was sitting in his spot. Choji moved over to give Shikamaru some room. Shikamaru then laid down and asked Choji if he wanted to watch the clouds with him. Choji became happy and asked Shikamaru if he wanted to eat some snacks he'd brought. Shikamaru agreed to the offer, causing Choji to be overjoyed. Shikamaru then said, "This is the best, watching clouds and eating chips". From then on, they were best friends.

During Choji's time at the Academy, he often got in trouble for eating in class, or getting in trouble with the other "dead-lasts" Shikamaru Nara, Naruto Uzumaki and Kiba Inuzuka. Together, they'd cut class and test the patience of Iruka Umino.

Ino Yamanaka, daughter of Inoichi Yamanaka.

Ino was much more confident and popular than Sakura Haruno when they met at the Academy. She convinced Sakura that hiding her forehead was pointless, and so she gave Sakura a red ribbon to draw attention elsewhere, saying that Sakura had great potential but hadn't reached it yet. She helped Sakura gain confidence, and even defended her whenever someone messed with her. When Sakura became attracted to the popular Sasuke Uchiha, and found out that Ino liked him as well, Sakura ended their friendship, which hurt Ino in the processs, to compete properly for Sasuke's love. However, Ino and Sakura seemed to have become friends once again in the Chunin Exams, but are still seen and considered as rivals by many.

Asuma Sarutobi, son of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and uncle to Konohamaru.

Not much is known of Asuma's background but at some point in time Asuma had a disagreement with his father, and left Konoha to pursue his personal interests. During his absence, he became one of the Twelve Guardian Ninja, a group that protects the Land of Fire's daimyo, this is indicated by the sash around his waist. Also, he developed a strong friendship with the monk Chiriku, who would go on to become the head monk of the Fire Temple.

Prior to returning to Konoha to resume active military duty, he obtained a bounty of 35 million ryo, something he is particularly proud of.
